Performing "Old Landmark," Dr. Charles G. Hayes & the Cosmopolitian Church of Prayer Choir gets down and churchy at the 2004 GMWA convention in Kansas City, MO.

WALTER HAWKINS
Love Alive III
Light, 1985

On his third Love Alive installment, Walter Hawkins assembles more of his colorful and radiant compositions - clearly echoing the abundance of his edgy contemporary gospel style. With the funky sounds of the album's super hit "When The Battle Is Over" and the gorgeous beauty of the gospel ballad "I Love You, Lord" leading the way, Love Alive III proved to be one of Hawkins' glorified projects. Also included - and far from being mere suggestions - are the soulful, churchy sounds of "He'll Bring You Out," Daryl Coley's marvelous composition "Return, Oh Backslider," and the juicy deliveries heard on the prophetic "There's A War Going On." Lynette Hawkins-Stephens also breaks out into her traditional form of shouting batters on the latter track as the song repeats the praises of her signature classic, "My God Is Standing By." The tempo changes towards the end and the song bursts into an intense frenzy of gospel dynamics. The best-selling album shot up to number one on the gospel charts and also topped the million sales mark. "When The Battle Is Over" has been covered a number of times recently by artists including Benita Washington, the COGIC International Mass Choir and the Atlanta Centennial Mass Choir and remains an important staple in contemporary gospel music.

Are you comfortable with purchasing concert tickets held at churches?
Yes.
No.
Not really. It depends on the event and artist.
Doesn't matter to me.

the unofficial timeline of the gmwa

It's been over forty years since the inception of the Gospel Music Workshop of America - the largest gospel music organization in the world - and the history that surrrounds this world renowned institution is great. While there is an incredible lack of documentation out there citing its legacy and important facts, we uncover the special events, album recordings and important presentations made at the annual event with a very exclusive time machine covering four decades of the GMWA.

gospel's worst album covers ever?

Mainstream has its share of tasteless, horrific album covers, but gospel has put out some bad choices also. That doesn't mean the content on the albums is bad...it just means we should be a little extra careful in judging the book by its cover. We went through tons of albums and choose twenty covers that surely makes the cut. But don't be mad about our choices...get mad at the cover designers.
