The last song R&B sensation and three-time Grammy winner Jill Scott wants to hear right now is K’Jon’s “On the Ocean.”
Hidden Beach Recordings filed suit against their former labelmate Jill Scott; accusing her of skipping out of their six-album contract and potentially owing millions of dollars in damages.
“Hidden Beach is shocked by her decision not only because Scott has apparently chosen to leave the Hidden Beach family,” the complaint reads, “but also because Scott is contractually required to deliver three more albums to Hidden Beach.” – Hollywood Reporter
The complaint alleges causes of action for breach of contract and damages owed under a section of California’s Labor Code sometimes known as the “De Havilland Law.” Named after actress Olivia De Hallivand’s successful fight against long-term studio deals in the 1940s, it provides that talent cannot be bound to contracts set up for over seven years.
Makes sense – since a six album contract feels like a lifetime. Hidden Beach knows that, but still wants Scott to pay back millions from her walkout.
